A partnership bringing together the built environment and environmental conservation to support healthier, more sustainable communities.
Crown Paints has strengthened its commitment to environmental sustainability through a partnership with the Institution of Quantity Surveyors of Kenya (IQSK), bringing together industry professionals, government representatives, employees and the local community for a major tree-planting initiative at the Nyali Affordable Housing Project in Mombasa.
The initiative saw the planting of 3,000 trees, reinforcing the importance of integrating environmental conservation into the development of sustainable communities.
The exercise brought together members of the local community, the Kenya Forest Service (KFS), IQSK members and Crown Paints employees in a collective effort to support nature restoration and environmental stewardship.
Planting Trees, Building Sustainable Communities
The tree-planting exercise covered areas within the Nyali Affordable Housing Project, including the assembly area designated for the school's use.
The initiative recognises that sustainable development must extend beyond the provision of housing and physical infrastructure. It should also account for the natural environment, the quality of public spaces and the long-term wellbeing of communities.
Trees play an important role in maintaining healthy ecosystems. They absorb carbon dioxide, provide shade, help stabilise soil, support biodiversity and contribute to improved environmental conditions. Within residential and institutional settings, well-maintained trees can also create more comfortable outdoor spaces for residents, learners and the wider community.
By incorporating tree planting into an affordable housing development, Crown Paints and IQSK are demonstrating how environmental responsibility can become part of the planning and development of communities.
A Partnership Driving Environmental Responsibility
The collaboration between Crown Paints and IQSK highlights the role that professional institutions and the private sector can play in advancing environmental sustainability.
The participation of the Kenya Forest Service, local residents, IQSK members and Crown Paints employees further demonstrated the importance of collective responsibility in environmental conservation.
Kenya's environmental restoration agenda calls for coordinated action across government, businesses, institutions and communities. The country's National Mazingira Day celebrations in October 2026 were held under the theme, Our Environment, Our Responsibility: Collective Action for Tree Growing and Environmental Stewardship, reinforcing the need for sustained participation in tree growing and ecosystem restoration.
The Mombasa initiative adds to these collective efforts, demonstrating how partnerships within the built environment can contribute to a broader environmental agenda.
Building on Crown Paints' Tree-Planting Commitment
For Crown Paints, the Mombasa initiative is part of a wider sustainability journey guided by its 2030 Sustainability Strategy, Protecting What Matters.
The strategy integrates environmental stewardship, community impact, operational excellence and sustainable innovation into the Group's approach to responsible business growth.
Other initiatives highlighted in 2026 include supporting tree planting at Shauri Moyo Primary School in Kisumu and advancing a bamboo project through field engagement at Kamwenja Teachers Training College in Nyeri.
Growing Responsibly, Protecting What Matters
The partnership with IQSK at the Nyali Affordable Housing Project demonstrates the potential of collective action in advancing environmental sustainability within Kenya's built environment.
By bringing together professional institutions, government agencies, employees and local communities, Crown Paints continues to support initiatives that connect environmental conservation with community development.
As the Group advances its 2030 Sustainability Strategy, tree planting and nature restoration will remain important expressions of its commitment to responsible growth.
Because building a sustainable future is not only about the structures we put up; it is also about the environment we leave behind.
